Mediation of Spatial Information and Services

Spatial information mediation extends principles of information mediation to processing of spatial queries against multiple heterogeneous spatial databases and spatial processing nodes. This architecture is based on (1) a set of spatial wrappers which expose capabilities of spatial data sources and services in a homogeneous way, (2) spatial mediation software responsible for query planning and orchestrating query execution, and (3) spatial presentation services. This paper describes the specifics of spatial information mediation, and presents a model of spatial capabilities for mediation. A spatial capability description of a source includes spatial coverage declarations for all maintained spatial datasets, as well as function signatures for all supported spatial data interchange and spatial data transformation functions. Using a running example of a complex spatial query the paper demonstrates generation of feasible query evaluation plans based on source capability descriptions.
